Time After The Creation

Adam's creation

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.

Adam was created on the sixth day of the creation week. Since this is during the creation week, it is the start of this time line

0

1235

Mahalalel's death

Genesis 5:16 After he begot Jared, Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years, and had sons and daughters.

Genesis 5:17 So all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years; and he died.

830 years after Jared's birth, or 895 years after Mahalalel's birth, Mahalalel died.

1290

Jared's death

Genesis 5:19 After he begot Enoch, Jared lived eight hundred years, and had sons and daughters.

Genesis 5:20 So all the days of Jared were nine hundred and sixty-two years; and he died.

800 years after Enoch's birth, or 962 years after Jared's birth, Jared died.

1422

Shem's birth

Genesis 11:10 This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.

2 years after the flood, Shem was 100 years old.

Note: Genesis 5:32 which states "And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth." was not used because it is unclear if all 3 sons were born in the same year. Using Genesis 11:10, Noah was 502 when Shem was born. See the notes for Noah's death. The reference for the end of the flood is not when the waters dried up in Genesis 8:13, but some time before that. As in Genesis 9:28-29, the reference will be when Noah was 600 years old as the end of the flood.

1559

Lamech's death

Genesis 5:30 After he begot Noah, Lamech lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and had sons and daughters.

Genesis 5:31 So all the days of Lamech were seven hundred and seventy-seven years; and he died.

1651

Genesis 5:27 So all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred and sixty-nine years; and he died.

782 years after Lamech's birth, or 969 years after Methuselah's birth, Methuselah died.

1656

Flood starts

Genesis 7:11  In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

600 years after Noah's birth, the flood starts

1656

Flood ends (waters were dried up)

Genesis 8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and indeed the surface of the ground was dry.

601 years after Noah's birth, the flood ends.

Josephus: In The Antiquities of the Jews 8:3:1, the construction of the temple began 1440 years after the ‘Deluge’. He also said in that same paragraph that the temple was built 3102 years after the creation of Adam. According to 1 Kings 6:38, the temple took 7 years to complete. The difference puts the year the flood ended to be 1655. This gives validity to the Masoretic text time line. Each of the dates mentioned is rounded to the nearest year. The difference between Josephus and the date derived from the Masoretic text is only 2 years. This is well within the expected tolerance.

1657

Arphaxad's birth

Genesis 11:10 This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.

2 years after the flood, or 100 years after Shem's birth, Arphaxad was born.

Note: See the notes for Noah's death. The reference for this date is not when the waters dried up in Genesis 8:13, but some time before that. As in Genesis 9:28-29, the reference will be when Noah was 600 years old as the end of the flood.

1658

Genesis 11:12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah.

35 years after Arphaxad's birth, Salah was born.

Genesis 11:14 Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber.

30 years after Salah's birth, Eber was born.

1723

Peleg's birth

Genesis 11:16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg.

34 years after Eber's birth, Peleg was born

1757

Reu's birth

Genesis 11:18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu.

30 years after Peleg's birth, Reu was born

Terah's birth

Genesis 11:24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah.

29 years after Nahor’s birth, Terah was born

1878

Abraham's birth

Genesis 11:26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

70 years after Terah’s birth, Abram (later changed to Abraham) was born.

Note: Unlike the time of Shem's birth, there is no other verses that point to Abraham's birth being any later than Terah's seventieth year.

1948

Nahor's birth

Genesis 11:26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

70 years after Terah’s birth, Nahor was born.

Note: Unlike the time of Shem's birth, there is no other verses that point to Nahor's birth being any later than Terah's seventieth year.

1948

Haran's birth

Genesis 11:26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

70 years after Terah’s birth, Haran was born.

Note: Unlike the time of Shem's birth, there is no other verses that point to Abraham's birth being any later than Terah's seventieth year.

1948

Sarah's birth

Genesis 17:17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?"

When Abraham was 100 years old, Sarah was 90 years old. Therefore, 10 years after Abraham’s birth, Sarah was born.

1958

Peleg's death

Genesis 11:19 After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.

209 years after Reu’s birth, Peleg died

1996

Nahor's death

Genesis 11:25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

119 years after Terah’s birth, Nahor was born

1997

Noah's death

Genesis 9:28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

Genesis 9:29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.

350 years after the flood, or 950 years after Noah’s birth, Noah died.

Note: Subtracting 950 from 350 yields Noah’s age at the flood to be 600. Genesis 8:13 says Noah was 601. Therefore when Genesis 9:28 says that Noah lived 350 years after the flood, the reference is not when the waters died. The reference is most likely be when the rain stopped.

2005

Abraham departs from Haran to Canaan

Genesis 12:4-5 So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan.

Genesis 16:3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.

75 years after Abraham’s birth, Abram (later changed to Abraham) departed from Haran. Also, Abraham had been in Canaan 10 years when Ishmael was conceived. Since 9 months later, Ishmael was born, the time Abraham was in Canaan at Ismael’s birth was 11 years.

Note: An assumption is made in the Genesis 16 passage that Ishael was conceived less than a year after Abraham took Hagar. Since the times established from Genesis 12 agree with this asumption, it is taken as correct.

2023

Reu's death

Genesis 11:21 After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

207 years after Serug's birth, Reu died.

2026

Ishmael's birth

Genesis 16:16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.

Genesis 17:23-25 So Abraham took Ishmael his son, all who were born in his house and all who were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very same day, as God had said to him.  Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

Abraham was 86 when Ishmael was born. Also, Ishmael was 13 years old when Abraham was 99 years old. Therefore, 86 years after Abraham's birth, Ishmael was born.

2034

God's promise to Abraham

Genesis 17:17,19 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?" Then God said: "No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.

90 years after Sarah's birth, or 100 years after Abraham's birth, Isaac was born.

Joseph starts service for Pharaoh

Genesis 41:28-34 "This is the thing which I have spoken to Pharaoh. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do. "Indeed seven years of great plenty will come throughout all the land of Egypt; "but after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten in the land of Egypt; and the famine will deplete the land. "So the plenty will not be known in the land because of the famine following, for it will be very severe. "And the dream was repeated to Pharaoh twice because the thing is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. "Now therefore, let Pharaoh select a discerning and wise man, and set him over the land of Egypt. "Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint officers over the land, to collect one-fifth of the produce of the land of Egypt in the seven plentiful years.

Genesis 41:39-40 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Inasmuch as God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you. "You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word; only in regard to the throne will I be greater than you."

Pharaoh made Joseph in charge of Egypt because of the interpretation he had of Pharaoh's dream. It is assumed that the years of plenty started the year Joseph started service for Pharaoh. If the abundance didn't start as soon as Joseph started work, Pharaoh would have thought the interpretation was incorrect. Also, Pharaoh put Joseph in charge to plan during the years of plenty, for the years of famine.

2229

Years of plenty begin in Egypt

Genesis 41:53-54 Then the seven years of plenty which were in the land of Egypt ended, and the seven years of famine began to come, as Joseph had said. The famine was in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

God makes promise to Jacob

Exodus 43:3-7 So He said, "I am God, the God of your father; do not fear to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there. "I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will put his hand on your eyes." Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives, in the carts which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. So they took their livestock and their goods, which they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and went to Egypt, Jacob and all his descendants with him. His sons and his sons' sons, his daughters and his sons' daughters, and all his descendants he brought with him to Egypt.

Promise given to Jacob the same year Jacob moves to Egypt.

2238

"There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine."'

5 years after Jacob moves to Egypt, the famine in Egypt ends.
